Today's post is a bit special, it's an announcement! It's the announcement of the arrival of the Lolita dress pattern next Friday on Wearlemonade ! When I announced that I was getting married a few months ago, many of you hinted that you'd like to see a DIY wedding dress! I thought it was a great idea, especially as I wanted to design my own dress for my special day. I wanted a dress that was short but not too short, I'm not a big fan of my knees, and I had in mind the dress from Catherine Deneuve's dress flying across the church square. I wanted it to be close to the body at the waist, and I wanted 3/4 sleeves because I find that extremely flattering. And to top it all off, I wanted to give a nod to my lover, who's a fan of shoulders, with a super bateau neckline - we'll call it the Titanic neckline.
Well, to tell the truth, we're going to celebrate our wedding 3 times, on 3 different days, so 3 different dresses! Clever girl... And today I wanted to show you the dress I'll be wearing at the town hall. I haven't yet made my dress in the fabric I'll be wearing on the big day, but I have to admit that since the yellow and white version came into my life, it's put a bit of a question mark on my plans. I think it's funny and it looks like me too... I had a really hard time imagining myself in white, and I have to say thank you! Pauline Darley for capturing me with such gentleness... To tell you the truth, the dresses have been made for a while at the office, and I've tried them on many times, but I just couldn't go for the white one. I always moved on when Laure asked me to come and try it on, to see if everything fell as well as it did on the others... And when I wore it for the photo shoot, I had a little emotion when I discovered myself all in white, which was actually the last one we shot...
So why "plan B"? Because I can't hide the fact that I've been hanging out on wedding websites and hearing my girlfriends talk about the latest designer to bring in lace from a small village in the north of France. Costing the price of a car, for a dress they'll only wear once. But what a time! But I can understand why anyone would splurge on a dress; I have a similar problem with shoes... Still, on top of the price tag, there's the goldsmith's work that goes into the dresses, which gives me the chills. You'll tell me that one can't go without the other. But for me, these designer wedding gowns are haute couture, and I'm all for it. Sammy in Scoubidoo. I'm bound to get my feet caught in my dress, tear the silk tulle and spill my glass of red wine all over it. For all my respect for craftsmanship and the skills of small hands, I don't feel crazy about wearing a signed dress to my wedding. Not because I don't want to, but because: firstly, I can't afford it and secondly, even if I did, my Gaston Lagaffe karma would never spare this sublime dress, which wouldn't have asked for anything from anyone. Except to be worn by a perfect girl, like Gwyneth Paltrow.
So I imagined an oilcloth wedding dress! Just kidding. I imagined this Lolita dress as your Plan B dress, because you may not be clumsy like me, but your Great Uncle Roger after 2 grams might be. And when your bridesmaids and mother are trying to retrieve your dress with coarse salt and Marseille soap, you won't have to wait for it to dry and you can slip into your Plan B Wear Lemonade dress, lovingly made by you, your grandmother or the local tailor.
Lolita could very well become your Plan A - I'd be extremely honored! Or let's be crazy, it could also become the dress for your bridesmaids... Or in navy blue, maybe the dress you'll wear to the office next week... I'll see you next Friday at 10am to adopt Lolita's pattern (only the pattern this time)!
